You should immediately do this after you make a tough decision
You should immediately do this after you make a tough decisionYou should immediately do this after you make a tough decisionDo you often find yourself making tough decisions? Looking for some clarity afterward? Well, take a cue from Shakespeare and run to the bathroom. That sounds weird, but it actually has science behind it. In William Shakespeares famous tragedy Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, runs to wash the blood off her hands after her husband kills Duncan, the King of Scotland. Now hopefully none of your decisions involve murdering someone, but the concept of washing your hands to calm yourself and move on after making a bold decision has some merit to it.It is known as theLady Macbeth effect and researchers recently proved that it works. As parte ofa study published in the journal,Scienceparticipants were asked to rank 10 music CDs (from a list of 30) and then choose their 5th and 6th favorite album to take home as a gift (for themselves.)Once they made their decision some of the partic ipants were asked to wash their hands while some were not. A little bit later they were asked to rank the CDs again and those who got to wash their hands stuck with the same order, while the people with dirtier hands moved the ones ranked the one they got to bring home two places higher to make them feel better about their decision.Clean slateOther studies have shown that performing an unethical act does drive a need to self cleanse. Authors Spike W. S. Lee and Norbert Schwarz of the University of Michigan believe that the Lady Macbeth effect could be part of a larger clean slate effect. Even if your decision wasnt a hard or bad one to make there is still a strong need to remove the weight of it by cleaning it off.Plus, washing your hands is never a bad thing (especially with all the germs floating around an office.) And at least it wasnt advice from one of Shakespeares other most famous tragedies. Because in that case every time you met a potential love interest youd have to marry them then andform a joint suicide pact.

Jeff Bezos Its harder to be kind than clever
Jeff Bezos Its harder to be kind than cleverJeff Bezos Its harder to be kind than cleverIts graduation season, and we here at Ladders have decided to take a look back and showcase some past commencement addresses that stand the test of time. Below is the full transcript of Jeff Bezos commencement address toPrincetons Class of 2010As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents on their ranch in Texas. I helped fix windmills, vaccinate cattle, and do other chores. We also watched soap operas every afternoon, especially Days of our Lives. My grandparents belonged to a Caravan Club, a group of Airstream trailer owners who travel together around the U.S. and Canada. Every few summers, wed join the caravan. Wed hitch up the Airstream trailer to my grandfathers car and off wed go in a line with 300 other Airstream adventurers. I loved and worshipped my grandparents and I really looked forward to these trips. On one particular trip, I welches about 10 years old. I was rolling around in th e big bench seat in the back of the car. My grandfather was driving and my grandmother had the passenger seat. She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the smell. At that age, Id take any excuse to make estimates and do minor arithmetic. Id calculate our gas mileage or figure out useless statistics on things like grocery spending. Id been hearing an ad campaign about smoking. I cant remember the details, but basically the ad said every puff of a cigarette takes some number of minutes off of your life. I think it might have been two minutes per puff. At any rate, I decided to do the math for my grandmother. I estimated the number of cigarettes per days, estimated the number of puffs per cigarette and so on. When I was satisfied that Id come up with a reasonable number, I poked my head into the front of the car, tapped my grandmother on the shoulder and proudly proclaimed, At two minutes per puff, youve taken nine years off your lifeI have a vivid memory of what happened next and it was not what I expected. I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. Jeff, youre so smart. You had to have made some tricky estimates, figure out the number of minutes in a year and do some division. Thats not what happened. Instead, my grandmother burst into tears. I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. While my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway. He got out of the car and came around and opened my door and waited for me to follow. Was I in trouble? My grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man. He had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time? Or maybe he would ask that I get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother. I had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge what the consequences might be. We stopped beside the trailer. My grandfather looked at me and after a bit of silence, he gently an d calmly said, Jeff, one day youll understand that its harder to be kind than clever.Itscommencement seasonFollow Ladders Commencement Addresses magazine on Flipboard to watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past. What I want to talk to you about today is the difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy - theyre given after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if youre not careful, and if you do, itll probably be to the detriment of your choices. This is a group with many gifts. Im sure one of your gifts is the gift of a smart and capable brain. Im confident thats the case because admission is competitive and if there werent some signs that youre clever, the dean of admission wouldnt have let you in.Your smarts will come in handy because you will travel in a land of marvels. We humans, plodding as we are, will astonish ourselves. Well invent ways to generate clean ene rgy and a lot of it. Atom by atom, well assemble tiny machines that will enter cell walls and make repairs. This month comes the extraordinary but also inevitable nachrichtensendung that weve synthesized life. In the coming years, well not only synthesize it, but well engineer it to specifications. I believe youll even see us understand the human brain. Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Galileo, Newton, all the curious from the ages would have wanted to be alive most of all right now. As a civilization, we will have so many gifts, just as you as individuals have so many individual gifts as you sit before me.How will you use these gifts? And will you take pride in your gifts or pride in your choices?I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that Web usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. Id never seen or heard of anything that grew that nahe daran sein and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles, something that simply couldnt exist in t he physical world, was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and Id been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go do this crazy thing that probably wouldnt work since most startups dont and I wasnt sure what would happen after that. MacKenzie, also a Princeton grad and sitting here in the second row, told me I should go for it. As a young boy, Id been a garage inventor. Id invented an automatic gate closer out of cement-filled tires, a solar cooker that didnt work very well out of an umbrella and tinfoil, baking-pan alarms to entrap my siblings. Id always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant babo that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I was going to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, T hat sounds like a really good idea but it would be an even better idea for someone who didnt already have a good job. That logic made some sense to me and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didnt think Id regret trying and failing and I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. Aftermuch consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and Im proud of that choice.Tomorrow, in a very real sense, your life, the life you author from scratch on your own, begins. How will you use your gifts? What choices will you make? Will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions? Will you follow dogma, or will you be original? Will you choose a life of ease, or a life of service and adventure? Will you wilt under criticism, or will you follow your convictions? Will you bluff it out when youre wrong, or will you apologize? Will you guard your heart against rejection, or will you act when you fall in love? Will you play it safe, or will you be a little bit swashbuckling? When its tough, will you give up, or will you be relentless? Will you be a cynic, or will you be a builder? Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind?I will hazard a prediction. When you are 80 years old and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story. Thank you and good luck

The Legal Case for Trans Rights by Robert L. Tsai YES Magazine Transgender Rights Lambda Legal Know Your Rights National Center for Transgender Equality Transgender Rights American Civil Liberties Union One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees a re women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total s pending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
